5 Basic Lashings
1. Square Lashing
Used to join two spars at 90 degrees to prevent the tendency for the spars to slip over each other under heavy load.
2. Shear Lashing
Somewhat alike to the round lashing, this lashing allows the spars to be opened to form an A-frame or sheer legs (used in pioneering). The spars open from angles between 0 to 45 degrees.
3. Round Lashing
Used to tie two spars together side by side. Can be used to extend the length of the poles. One example would be flagstaff.
Gyn Lashing
Used to join 3 or more spars together. One common usage would be to make a tripod stand for cooking with three spars. Another common use would be to lash many spars/poles together to form a raft.
Diagonal Lashing
Used to join two spars from angles between 45 degrees to 90 degrees. The only lashing learnt that does not start with a clove hitch.
